Abstract 

Marion Waller will present the urban strategy developed by the City of Paris around greening streets, planning the public space for pedestrians and bikes, transforming emblematic spots such as the riverbanks and the main squares. She will explain the method used to change the architectural processes in Paris in order to favor renovation rather than demolition and bio-sourced materials rather than concrete. She will also present the results of the “Reinventing Paris” competition and how innovation can be combined with the Parisian patrimony.

Green Cities 2021 is a monthly virtual lecture program organized by the Consortium for Sustainable Urbanization on the first Thursday of each month at noon Eastern Time. The series focuses on innovations and achievements in sustainability and resilience worldwide. Marion Waller is Advisor to the Mayor of Paris, in charge of architecture, urban landscape, green spaces and funerary monuments. She has previously worked for the Deputy Mayor in charge of urban planning, Jean-Louis Missika, and has helped deploy “Reinventing Paris,” the international call for innovative urban projects that was then exported to other European cities. She is an urbanist and a philosopher specialized in environmental studies and has published her first book in 2016, “Artefacts Naturels”, about ecological restoration and ways of “reinhabiting” nature.

Rick Bell, FAIA is an Adjunct Associate Professor at Columbia University where he also is Deputy Director of the Center for Buildings, Infrastructure and Public Space. Rick previously served as Executive Director of Design and Construction Excellence at the New York City Department of Design and Construction where he was also Assistant Commissioner of Architecture and Engineering and Director of In-House Design. On leave from DDC he served as Executive Director of AIA New York and helped create and animate the Center for Architecture on LaGuardia Place.
